Creating shadow using lines and marks
The first part of this exercise i did in my sketch book and started off by splitting the page into 8 separate boxes, each of those boxes was then split into 4. Using a different mediums and different lines and marks i was going to see if i could generate 4 very distinct tones.
Working from the top the mediums i used are, top two squares 2B graphite pencil, second two black bic biro, third two black felt tip pen and the bottom two were charcoal pencils. As you can see i used a variety of lines and dots, so straight some wavy and using all 4 mediums and all different marks i managed to succeed in making 4 very different tones. This was achieved by bringing the marks closer together or further apart depending on how light or dark you wanted the tone to be.
The next part of this exercise was to use this technique to create a quick loose sketch of 3 objects and to show the three dimensional form of each. I decided to use three different shapes (rectangle, cylinder, sphere) and also three different marks (straight lines, cross hatching and dots). This is how it turned out
I am really pleased with the dots on the apple and may play around with this idea some more. I also liked the effect the straight lines had on the can but was less pleased with the cross hatching. It did show the boxes form and shadows but all in all i just thought it didn't work as well as the other two styles.
